Winchester makes a primer that can be used in standard or magnum loads .. the WLP. Wolff also makes SLPPs but I don't know their ID. It's eye-Oh-wee-jan . WebAug 20, 2009 · Some handloading books call for the 61/2 Primer we recommend the 71/2 for the .223. Both primers are correct. Both primers are the same size but the primer cup on 71/2 is made of thicker metal. Remington feels with the higher pressure on the .223 it would be better to use the 71/2. Just says not to use the 1 1/2 primers in higher pressure rounds like 357 Mag, 357 Sig, 40 S&W. I found where others stated the 5 1/2 primers were not magnum, but just a thicker cup. So I ended up just calling Remington today myself.

According to Remington, the 7 ½ has a 25% greater cup thickness and they state on their web site: "In rifle cartridges, the 6-1/2 small rifle primer should not be used in the 17 Remington, 222 Remington or the 223 Remington. The 7-1/2 BR is the proper small rifle primer for these rounds."

Their 1 1/2 small pistol primer is also not recommended for "high pressure rounds" such as the .40 S&W and 357 Sig.
